Savings Opportunities Overview

Follow

The savings opportunities overview shows you recommendations to reduce your cloud spend, including your current average cloud resource costs and potential savings if you act on the recommendations.

Savings opportunities must be turned on in the system settings in order to use them. For more information on how to do this, see the Savings Opportunities Settings page. For more information about savings opportunities, including terminology and the types of recommendations cloudtamer.io makes, see the What is a Savings Opportunity? article.

To view the savings opportunities overview: in the left navigation menu, click Savings Opportunities > Savings Opportunities Overview.

From this page, you can click on the links on the top right:

  • Click Settings to go to the Savings Opportunities Settings page.
  • Click Applied Opportunities to see a list of savings opportunities that have already been applied.

Savings Opportunities Summary

The savings opportunities summary displays the following charts. You can filter the results using the drop-down menus to select a cloud provider (CP), service, and/or project, and can check the box next to Include Dismissed to include savings opportunities that have already been dismissed. Filters remain active when moving between savings opportunity pages; click Clear Selected to remove the filters.

Cost

Cost is displayed as a bar chart. Use the Monthly and Annual buttons above the charts to toggle between monthly and annual totals. The chart compares the following:

  • The Average Cost for all scanned resources in your cloud environment. This is calculated by averaging the monthly spend across cloud providers for the last three months. You can hover over the information icon mceclip0.png to learn which months were used in this calculation.
  • The Potential Cost, which is the projected cost for all scanned resources should you appropriately apply all of the recommendations.

Savings

Savings is displayed as a donut chart. Use the Monthly and Annual buttons above the charts to toggle between monthly and annual savings. The chart shows the following:

  • Potential Savings, which is the projected amount you would save by appropriately applying all of the recommendations.
    • A breakdown of the potential savings by savings opportunity type. Click on Decommissioning Opportunities or Rightsizing Opportunities to view metrics and details for that savings opportunity type.

Decommissioning Opportunities

Click Decommissioning Opportunities next to the donut chart on the savings opportunities overview to display the decommissioning opportunities page. This page shows each individual resource with a decommissioning opportunity, including the resource name, the current settings, the recommended settings, the CP, the region, the affected account, the current monthly cost for that resource, and the potential monthly savings for that resource.

You can filter the results by keyword using the search icon on the left, and you can use the arrow buttons to navigate through the pages of results.

A floating ellipsis menu will appear on the right if you hover over a resource. This menu gives you the options to:

  • View details: expand the details drawer for that resource's savings opportunity.
  • Cloud access: log into the affected CP (requires sufficient permissions).
  • Terminate resource: permanently terminate the resource. This makes it easy for users to decommission a resource that is not being utilized, but please use this option with caution, as terminating the wrong resources can disrupt services in your production environment. This option will only display if you enable termination in the settings.
  • Mark as applied: mark the savings opportunity as applied. You should choose this option if you log into your CP and apply the recommended change manually.
  • Dismiss: mark the savings opportunity as dismissed, which indicates you do not wish to act on the recommendation at this time. Dismissed opportunities can be reviewed later by using the Include Dismissed checkbox on any page.

This page shows each individual resource with a rightsizing opportunity, including the resource name, the current settings, the recommended settings, the CP, the region, the affected account, the current monthly cost for that resource, and the potential monthly savings for that resource.

A floating ellipsis menu will appear on the right if you hover over a resource. This menu gives you the options to:

  • View details: expand the details drawer for that resource's savings opportunity.
  • Cloud access: log into the affected CP (requires sufficient permissions).

Opportunity Details Drawer

Each savings opportunity that is recommended for a specific resource has an opportunity details drawer. Click the ellipsis menu on the right of a resource and select View details to open the details drawer.

The details drawer lists the savings opportunity, the resource, the resource's details, and the cost and savings information for that resource (monthly and annually). The savings information is the projected amount you would save by appropriately applying this recommendation to this resource.

Version 2.27.0 and higher: The Share and Open Page buttons let you share or open the link for the Opportunity Details Page, which gives you all of the info from the savings opportunity details drawer with a shareable link.

The details drawer also has a Cloud access button to log into the resource's CP and an Actions drop-down menu. The Actions menu provides the following options:

  • Terminate resource: permanently terminate the resource. This makes it easy for users to decommission a resource that is not being utilized, but please use this option with caution, as terminating the wrong resources can disrupt services in your production environment. This option will only display if you enable termination in the settings.
  • Mark opportunity as applied: mark the savings opportunity as applied. You should choose this option if you log into your CP and apply the recommended change manually.
  • Dismiss opportunity: mark the savings opportunity as dismissed, which indicates you do not wish to act on the recommendation at this time. Dismissed opportunities can be reviewed later by using the Include Dismissed checkbox on any page.

Recent Opportunity Checks

The Recent Opportunity Checks section of the savings opportunities overview reports all of the recent savings opportunity checks with savings opportunities that haven't yet been applied. This section includes the quantity of resources affected, the opportunity check name, the current cost for all affected resources, and the potential savings if you apply the appropriate recommendation to all affected resources.

You can filter the view using the opportunity check type drop-down menu on the top right or search using the icon on the left, and you can use the arrow buttons to navigate through the pages of results. Use the Monthly and Annual buttons above the savings opportunity summary to toggle between monthly and annual cost and savings totals. Dismissed opportunities will display here with a gray background if you check off Include Dismissed on the savings opportunities summary.

Clicking on an opportunity check within the Recent Opportunity Checks list brings you to the opportunity check's detail page.

Opportunity Check Details Page

While each resource-level savings opportunity displays as a details drawer, each savings opportunity check, which can apply to more than one resource, has its own details page.

Click any savings opportunity check in the Recent Opportunity Checks list to display the opportunity check details page. This page shows similar cost and savings charts to the savings opportunities overview, but limits the results to the cost/savings for this opportunity check alone. The savings information is the projected amount you would save by appropriately applying this recommendation to all listed resources.

This page also lists each individual resource that is recommended for this savings opportunity check, including the resource name, the current settings, the CP, the region, the affected account, the current monthly cost for that resource, and the potential monthly savings for that resource.
